CARMICHAEL, CA (MPG) - On Tuesday, December 21, 2021, at approximately 1:30 pm, Sac Metro Fire units responded to a two-apartment fire at Twin Gardens Apartments on 5831 Fair Oaks Blvd in Carmichael.
Firefighters saw the column of smoke emanating from the apartment complex towards the back as they approached the scene. California Highway Patrol had to close off northbound Fair Oaks Blvd to traffic so a large number of fire trucks could access the property. The dispatch included 10 fire engines, six trucks and one medical vehicle with four battalion chiefs plus assistant chiefs. Fire personnel evacuated the occupants until the fire was contained and water services could be returned.
Sac Metro Fire Public Information Officer Diana Schmidt said the large response was “to ensure the fire did not spread to the numerous apartments in the property.” She said the fire involved several first and second story residences of which apartment unit #28 was the most affected‒with some fire damage visible from the outside. Firefighters put the fire out 10-15 minutes after arrival.
Schmidt said there was one minor injury, which medics treated at the fire scene. The fire department will continue to investigate the fire’s origin.

CARMICHAEL, CA (MPG) - Monthly jazz performances continue on January 4, at The Clubhouse Bar in Carmichael. After a pandemic hiatus, the tradition was revived in November.
The 17-piece Ron Cunha Big Band has made the restaurant a regional first-Tuesday jazz capital for more than six years. “The local community has supported live music,” says bandleader Cunha. “Our musicians come from as far as the Bay Area. We achieved a great following and we’re hoping to continue that momentum.”
Former Jesuit High music teacher Cunha (64) has played trombone professionally since his teens. In 2014, he found a steady Carmichael venue for ensemble performances. While there is no cover charge, musicians appreciate donations to the tip jar. Singer Susan Skinner will contribute vocals to the two-set gig on January 4.
“You get there early if you want a table,” notes an audience faithful. “Food is great, but first Tuesdays are all about the music. “Cunha’s arrangements are hip retakes on jazz classics. His musicians are the top of their field, and they hang with the fans. Carmichael’s lucky to have this event. Once a month, I feel more like I’m in Greenwich Village than on Fair Oaks Boulevard.”
The Cunha Big Band plays from 7 to 9:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday each month. The Clubhouse Bar and Grill is at 5150 Fair Oaks Boulevard. Vaccinations and masks are suggested. For information, call (916) 979-1422.
