CARMICHAEL, CA (MPG) - Wildlife lovers opened hearts and wallets at the recent Effie Yeaw Nature Center Spring Gala.

Supporters enjoying the al-fresco fete also saw deer and wild turkey within yards of their tables.  After a scaled-down 2021 event, the non-profit’s celebration returned to pre-pandemic format with more than 150 guests.

Good Day Sacramento anchor Molly Riehl was emcee and auctioneer Keith McLane spurred record-breaking auction bids. Paddles were wielded to raise more than $40,000 for fund-a-need opportunities. Some of these proceeds provide free nature education programs for schools that could not otherwise afford them.

Fundraising was augmented by an auction of art from the “Wild Things” show exhibited at Sacramento Fine Arts Center. Celebrity painters also donated work. Famed Carmichael artist Pat Mahony contributed a river portrait called “Wind Swept Afternoon” that blew away for $5750. Highest art price of $7500 was paid for Deladier Almeida’s “Spring Morning” landscape. A small Terry Muir canvas changed hands for $5000.

In addition to art, vacations and entertainment packages were auctioned. Furious bidding on a Sea Ranch (Sonoma) vacation raised more than $5000. Four tickets to a “Book of Mormon” performance inspired an $800 bid. A Placerville truffle hunt – libated by prickly pear mimosas and finessed by Italian truffle hounds – snouted up $1200.

“We were thrilled by support for our first back-to-normal gala,” rejoiced American River Natural History Association President Laurie Weir. “We’re grateful to those who donated art and prizes. Member and community response helps us face future challenges with improving confidence.”

Administered by the ARNHA, the Nature Center welcomes more than 100,000 visitors per year. Programs are catered for child and adult education. An adjacent 100-acre preserve is a protected home to countless birds, mammals and reptiles.

The Music is Back!

Story and photos by Susan Maxwell Skinner  |  2022-06-10

Ophir Prison Marching Band was among ensembles that performed at the Community Band Festival in Carmichael Park last weekend. Neil Hillel (AKA Captain Rufus T. Whizbang) conducted.

CARMICHAEL, CA (MPG) - A summer of music has kicked off in Carmichael.

Last weekend’s Community Band Festival presented two days of marches, pops and symphonic suites from almost 400 musicians. Hot on their heels, Carmichael Recreation and Park District Saturday concerts will begin on June 18.

The Sacramento valley Symphonic Band Association presented 14 bands for a blow-out that has been a Carmichael tradition for more than 20 years. More than 800 pairs of applauding hands added to the percussion.

“We were happy so many people came out to support us,” said festival organizer Grant Parker. “Musicians have been working hard, with few opportunities to rehearse during the pandemic. Some were not able to assemble till April. They all rose to the occasion. They were so eager to play for live audiences. They’ve all missed that interaction‒it just doesn’t happen through Zoom or streamed performances. We’re all looking forward to being back on June 3 and 4 next year.”

Meantime, a summer-long musical feast awaits the community.

An ‘80s funk performance by Latin Touch kicks off CRPD’s 10-concert season on June 18. On July 2, Carmichael and Mission Oaks Park Districts join forces to present a concert by Great Wide Open at La Sierra Community Center. This Tom Petty tribute will herald pre-Independence Day fireworks.

Mission Oaks Park District also offers a Gibbons Park performance by Wasted Space on September 25.

All community concerts are free and dancing is encouraged. Carmichael Park is located at 5750 Grant Avenue. La Sierra Center is at 5325 Engle Road. Gibbons Park is at 4701 Gibbons Drive.

Performance dates are as follows. Unless otherwise stated, concerts are in Carmichael Park. Downbeat is 6:30 pm.

June 18: Latin Touch (funk and Latin).

June 25: Hipper Than Hip (rock).

July 2: La Sierra Community Center. Great Wide Open (Tom Petty Tribute), 7 pm. Fireworks follow.

SACRAMENTO, CA (MPG) – The California Senate voted on May 25, 2022, unanimously to approve legislation written by Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins, D-San Diego, and co-written by Sen. Bill Dodd, D-Napa, to add wine and distilled spirits bottles to California’s recycling program.

“I am really pleased that so many of our Senate colleagues recognized the importance of this common sense bill that benefits our environment and consumers,” Sen. Dodd said. “With SB 1013 we can increase the recycling rates of millions of bottles that would otherwise wind up in our landfills or be illegally discarded. I look forward to seeing this bill with all its benefits for California pass the Assembly and be signed by Gov. Newsom.”

“SB 1013 is historic change that is 40 years in the making,” Pro Tem Atkins said. “I want to commend the wine industry, distilled spirits industry, environmental advocates, and other groups who have come together to support this landmark proposal. We will continue working with stakeholders as the bill moves through the Assembly to make sure remaining concerns are addressed, and then, hopefully, 2022 will be the year we can pop a cork and celebrate this overdue improvement to California’s recycling law.”

The California Beverage Container Recycling and Litter Reduction Act, established in 1986, encourages consumers to recycle beverage containers by requiring them to pay a deposit for eligible bottles. According to a 2019 report, curbside programs received approximately $172 million from the so-called Bottle Bill in 2017, including $15 million that is annually provided from the Beverage Container Recycling Fund.

Although the program includes beer, it does not include wine or spirits. It is estimated that California generates more than 500 million wine and spirits bottles each year, with less than 30% being recycled and over 300 million wine and spirits bottles going into landfills. Under Senate Bill 1013, wine and spirits bottles would be added to the program, leading to more recycling, increased business for recycling centers and reduced processing costs. The expansion would also cut greenhouse gas emissions by almost 200,000 tons of carbon dioxide while reducing litter of wine and spirits containers, a visible and dangerous component of urban litter pollution.

SB1013 is supported by a number of groups including Californians Against Waste, Heal the Bay, California Association of Local Conservation Corps, Monterey Regional Waste Management District, National Stewardship Action Council, Northern California Recycling Association, California Teamsters Public Affairs Council, The 5 Gyres Institute, the Plastic Pollution Coalition and Zero Waste USA. It has no formal opposition.

It passed the Senate with unanimous, bipartisan support. It heads next to the Assembly.

Senator Bill Dodd represents the 3rd Senate District, which includes all or portions of Napa, Solano, Yolo, Sonoma, Contra Costa, and Sacramento counties. You can learn more about the district and Senator Dodd at www.sen.ca.gov/dodd.
